Scientific Literacy and Cultural Tolerance
I. Name of the Forum:
Scientific Literacy and Cultural Tolerance
II. Introduction to the Forum:
As humanity has stepped into a new stage of increasing communication and exchanges between different states of civilization, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed to build a "community of shared future" for mankind. The path of China’s peaceful development is one that advocates openness and inclusiveness and exchanges and mutual learning between different civilizations, enhances mutual respect and win-win cooperation between countries, and promotes peaceful development around the world. Humanity as a community of shared future must advocate cultural inclusiveness.
Enhancing scientific literacy is an important way to improve public cultural tolerance. Upgrading public scientific literacy is conducive to equalization of public cultural service for the popularization of science, the general public's sharing of scientific and technological development, cultivation of an innovation-friendly culture, promotion of people's understanding of different cultures, and to facilitation of exchanges between different cultures.
For these reasons, the panel session “Scientific Literacy and Cultural Tolerance” of the WCSL, organized by GMW.cn (Guangming Daily's official website), will be held on the afternoon of August 18 at China National Convention Center. Top experts from home and aboard will be invited to attend discussions on such topics as how to improve public scientific literacy, how to promote exchanges between countries along the Belt and Road, and how to enhance cultural tolerance and boost cultural confidence. In so doing, we would like to make our own contribution to improving the Chinese model of public scientific literacy cultivation, building consensus and fostering global cooperation on establishing a shared platform for the promotion of public science literacy, and to the building of a community of shared future for mankind.
