Professor Lloyd Spencer Davis is the Stuart Professor of Science Communication at the University of Otago. His background is that of a scientist: last year was the 40th anniversary of when he began his research on the behaviour and ecology of penguins –and he still publishes in this area. For the last 33 years, he has also been a populariser of science, devoted to increasing science literacy principally through the production of science documentaries and authoring science books intended for a lay audience (both children and adults). In 2001, he transitioned into the academic side of science communication and now focuses his research in a number of areas related to science literacy, including the communication of science in the online environment through videos and websites. He is concerned with the gulf that exists between researchers and practitioners when it comes to science literacy. He is the author of 9 books about science, the senior editor of 2 edited volumes about science and science diplomacy, and an author on 150 refereed publications about topics that vary from Adelie penguins to zoology; science communication to science literacy. He is currently the Vice President of the Public Communication of Science and Technology Network.
